A lot have been inspirational to the new breed of guitar players while a whole lot imposed their influence in music and in other different fields. They have weathered the test of time, which makes it deserving to call them legends of the guitar.

A lot of established guitarists and struggling guitar novices look up to these names. Whether this new breed of guitar virtuosos are slated for fame or not, they have a long way to go before they can be considered an all time great. Here are the legends of the guitar and the reasons why they are epic.

There is only one Jimi Hendrix. Rocketed to fame in the late’60s by performing at the Monterey Pop Festival and then later at Woodstock in’69, Hendrix broke a number of guitar conventions and set a trail where other guitarist would soon follow. Hendrix pioneered the guitar feedback using his famed Statocaster and was the first to integrate overdriven amplifiers in his music genius.

Second best is the incredible Jimmy Page. Known to many as the main axeman of the celebrated rock band Led Zeppelin, Page first was a part of a band known as the Yardbirds. With his Gibson Les Paul Classic, Page conjured pure music when he was on stage and on fire. He is ranked as the ninth greatest guitarist in the Rolling Stones top 100 list.

Carlos Santana fuses guitar playing with his Latino flavor. With his Gibson SG electric guitar, he creates music infused with something that can be described as mystical and magical, whether the genre is rock, blues, jazz fusion and salsa. Santana’s music is inspiring no doubt, which really incites other Latin guitarist to step up and make some music.

Also a former original Yardbirds member, Eric Clapton is perhaps the most accomplished guitarist of his generation. With his popular Eric Clapton Artist Signature Stratocaster, he strummed his guitar all the way and won a number of Grammy awards and received three Hall of Fame inductions. When Clapton plays, expect everybody to fall silent and get spellbound.

Shot on a minuscule amount of money, and differentiated by abrasive, Scorsese like reality. The acting is superb and Jean de Segonzac’s hand-clutched camcorder is a definite plus. Alice Sweet Alice: For profit spacecraft unwittingly takes on an extraterrestrial being that wreaks ruthless chaos on the team. This space age terror film reverts to the’50?s style, although unfolds at a determinate pace, populates the tale with fascinating, vibrant characters, and plants its good scenes very nicely. Cast includes Tom Skerritt, Sigourney Weaver, John Hurt, Ian Holm, Harry Dean Stanton, Yaphet Kotto, and Veronica Cartwright. (117 minutes,’79)

The Little Thief: So-so personality picture of the title lass, a disassociated, amoral adolescent floating through life in postwar France. If she comes off as a girl Antoine Doinel, it’s since the original tale was co-written by Francois Truffuut, who was allegedly preparing to film this at the time of his demise. Cast includes Charlotte Gainsbourg, Didier Bezace, Simon de la Brosse, Nathalie Cardone, and Raoul Billerey. (104 minutes,’89)

The Big Road: This movie is about a shy busboy who commits himself to a selfish nightclub singer. The film is abnormal (and oddly watchable), with extremely unorthodox roles for both Fonda and Ball. Cast includes Henry Fonda, Lucille Ball, Barton Mafamilye, Eugene Pallette, Agnes Moorehead, Sam Levene, Ray Collins, Hans Conried, and Ozzie Nelson. (88 minutes,’42)

Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore: The movie tells the story of a lady’s odyssey to find out who she is and her effort to find some measure of cheerfulness after her spouse dies, leaving her and a youthful child penniless. Single White Female: Alison Jones has just dumped her fiance, and now needs a roommate to keep her apartment. She puts out a classified ad, and eventually chooses Hedra Carlson. Will Hedra be a good choice? Or has Alison made a huge mistake.

Nomad: On the desolate steppes of 18th-century Kazakhstan, when opponent tribes battle for freedom, mystic combatant Oraz saves a baby descended from Genghis Khan who is destined to join the country as “Mansur”. Historical fable has nasty sabers-on-horseback fights and excellent production layout (genuine human being add-ons) however trudging storytelling. Across the Universe: A young English boy comes to the US to find his father. On his search he finds, and falls in love with an American girl. Set in post Vietnam War US, this movie is really a vehicle to play a lot of Beatles music. Cast includes Julie Taymor. Evan Rachel Wood. Jim Sturgess, Joe Anderson, Dana Fuchs, Martin Luther McCoy. T. V. Carpio, Spencer Litf, Lisa Hogg, Bill Irwin, James Urbaniak, Dylan Baker, Joe Cocker, Bono, Salma Hayek, and Eddie Izzard all make appearances. (2007 Romance)

Another 48 Hours: The team from 48 Hours is back in action. Ex con Reggie Hammond, now freed from prison, is coerced by Detective Jack Gates to help him with another problem. Gates has been hunting an elusive powerful drug dealer. He needs Reggie’s help to catch this guy.

Copycat: Helen Hudson is being asked out of retirement to investigate a baffling set of murders. Hudson is a forensic psychologist specialized in serial killers. With detective M.J. Monahan, the two start to uncover the mystery. When the killer learns the two are tracking him, they become his next target.

Only the Strong: An Ex-Green Beret, his old Miami high school friend now bullied by a drug lord, turns twelve of the joint’s worst criminals into crime-busters by teaching them a hypnotic, Brazilian form of martial arts. They will now settle the score. Dopey however inoffensive; at its best in potently choreographed fight scenes. Cast includes Mark Dacascos, Stacey Travis, Geoffrey Lewis, Paco Christian Prieto, Todd Susman, Jeffrey and Anderson Gunter. (96 minutes, 1993)

So much is said about The Beatles legendary 1967 album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band but I think too much of what is said is about it’s historical significance and the like. Not enough attention is paid to the music itself. And that’s why with this article I’m focusing entirely on the music, one song at a time.

01. “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” – This is a brilliant way to start the album and it really sets the mood for the entire thing. The “concept” of the album is really quite loose, without this song there is no concept album! One thing I really dig about this song is the crazy horns section. Can you imagine many “rock bands” of today having the imagination to include something like that in their song?

02. “With a Little Help from my Friends” – The perfect song for Ringo Starr to sing. John Lennon & Paul McCartney wrote this song together specifically for Ringo to sing which I think makes the great lyrics all that much greater (think of them in that context.)

03. “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” – Now that the original mono version is available easily (with the release of The Beatles in Mono Box Set) it’s great to be able to hear what this album sounds like in mono (how it was “meant to be heard” originally.) And the heavy vocal effects on this song is probably one of the more interesting things about the mono mixes for me.

04. “Getting Better” – This song so perfectly encapsulates the sound of this album and what it’s all about to me.

05. “Fixing a Hole” – Tracks 4 through 6 are a beautiful slice of McCartney magic and I think this is actually my favorite of that great trio of songs.

06. “She’s Leaving Home” – Another great reason to get The Beatles in Mono Box Set. This song sounds faster and higher (by a semitone) in the mono version. It’s a treat to hear!

07. “Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite” – What a deliciously weird song this is. It’s brilliant how “far out” this album takes you. It’s like a journey to different parts of the world (and certainly there is time traveling involved as well.)

08. “Within You Without You” – Speaking of “far out” how about we go all the way to India? Some people don’t like this song because it doesn’t fit with their preconceived notions of what music is supposed to sound like. To me this song is brilliant because of that very reason. We shouldn’t limit ourselves.

09. “When I’m Sixty-Four” – I love how quickly the musical styles change with this album. We go from a carnival to India to music hall!

11. “Lovely Rita” – I have to admit that tracks #10 and #11 are probably my least favorites on the album. But considering I quite like both of those tracks, that says a lot about how much I love this album.

11. “Good Morning Good Morning” – My least favorite song on the album. Yet I still think it’s pretty great at times and it has some very interesting elements. I think that says a lot about how much I love this album.

12. “Sgt. Pepper’s (Reprise)” – Rocks harder than the first version. I love how it ties the album together and it’s brilliant how this closing version is “looser” just like a band may be looser at the end of a real show. And that’s what the concept of this album was all about after all. The idea was that this album would “go on tour” rather than the band themselves.

13. “A Day in the Life” – The greatest song ever.

So you have understood the 12-bar blues or at least the concept of it and you would like to push your blues playing to higher grounds.

Well your in luck my friend!

The better way to invigorate up your playing is to learn the blues shuffle rhythm. I am not sure where the name derives from, but the shuffle is a term used to identify the break down of a beat into 2 components where the first is lengthier than the second.

The blues shuffle rhythm is founded on an eighth note triplet rhythm. A triplet is when you use 3 notes in a given time space instead of two. In a standard 4/4 time signature where there is four quarter notes the eighth notes would be counted as…

1-&-2-&-3-&-4-& … where the &’s are the eighth notes between each quarter. to fill the same time signature with eighth note triplets we’d count as…

1-trip-let-2-trip-let-3-trip-let-4-trip-let … where the trip’s and let’s are eighth notes amounting up to 3 per quarter note. So basically…

1-& = 1-trip-let

The blues shuffle is achieved by playing the first and third notes in a series of triplets. So if the count is…

1-trip-let-2-trip-let-3-trip-let-4-trip-let … then you’ll be playing on all the down-beats or numbers and the let’s. I’ve indicated the notes you should be striking to better exemplify.

It is really popular for somebody to believe that they weren’t intended to be a singer – they just “weren’t born with it.” There is a wide group of people to blame for this myth: the uneducated.

For somebody to say “singing is something you have to be born with” is like saying “netball skills are something you have to be born with.” Tell Pele that it is something you have to be born with. You all know the story. Michael Jordan got CUT from his high school basketball game team.

He didn’t take that very well so he commenced exercising all day every single day. Then he made the team. Then he attained a spot on one of the most respected college basketball squads in the nation. Then he was draughted to the NBA and went down in history as one of the unsurpassed to ever play the game. Basketball accomplishments aren’t something you have to be born with, and neither are musical skills.

Anybody can discover how to sing.

There is something else to blame: the popular culture’s hit show “American Idol.” The show is Planned for entertainment, it is a BUSINESS. How do they get money? They sell all of the fledgling vocalists to America as a kind of entertainment. Also picture that those vocalists are specifically picked out because they are the worst case scenarios of singers who don’t know how to apply their articulation and have no control over pitch. I was in the similar spot as those “tone deaf singers.” Anybody who seen me sing would immediately point the finger and judge me as “tone deaf.” I am NOT tone deaf. When I met Eddy, he took me through some pitch valuation practises and it was clear that I am not tone deaf at all – I just didn’t recognize how to use my voice. I could hear the tune and pitches absolutely clear IN MY HEAD, but as soon as I tried to render it into vocals, I didn’t know HOW to do it – therefore it SEEMED as if I was tone deaf.

So the next time you hear a singer that you would label as “tone deaf,” think again. They in all probability just don’t know how to use their voice.
